On October 24, Sunrise SB joined Sunrise LA, Save Porter Ranch, and other local environmental justice organizations to create a human blockade on the driveway of the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility in Porter Ranch, CA. For over seven hours, Sunrise members effectively shut down operations at the facility, which in 2015 produced the worst natural gas leak in American history, spewing 100,000 tons of methane into the Earth’s atmosphere. Sunrise demanded that Governor Gavin Newsom fulfill his promise to sign an executive order that would permanently shut down the facility. Because Newsom declined to meet with Sunrise members on that day, we decided to confront him later that evening at a fundraiser for Kamala Harris, held at the Brentwood home of a movie producer. As Newsom gave a private speech to wealthy Hollywood donors, Sunrise members chanted and sang in the streets, demanding that he “SHUT IT DOWN.” While Newsom has not yet met our demands, the organizing of Sunrise and other environmental justice groups recently pressured him to adopt a partial moratorium on fracking projects in California.
