School Districts

Sunrise SB endorses for
Santa Barbara Unified School District
Virginia Alvarez
We proudly endorse Virginia Alvarez for Santa Barbara Unified School District Board of Education. Alvarez has worked for the district for over 30 years as both a teacher and an administrator, so she has the knowledge to make change. She puts a high priority on bilingual outreach to parents, and would be the only Spanish-speaker on the board. She is also committed to implementing Ethnic Studies as well as high quality education about the climate crisis. Finally, she wants to interrupt the school-to-prision pipeline by removing police officers from campuses, looking into the high suspension rate of Latinx students, and improving mental health resources.

Vicki Ben-Yaacov
Vicki Ben-Yaacov has a history of being involved with the school district as a volunteer and as the founder of a non-profit for STEAM outreach. She has lots of ideas for improving environmental education and sustainability in schools, and she emphasizes that actions should go along with teaching about sustainability in the classroom. Some of her plans are already being put into place, such as a composting program at Isla Vista school. She is also committed to increasing equity and input in the decision-making process for all students and parents.

Sholeh Jahangir
Sholeh Jahangir is already serving on the board and is doing great work, including creating a facilities master plan and starting a dual language immersion program. She works with many community organizations and sees access to basic needs such as health care, housing, and food as the first step to addressing inequality in the education system. In addition, she wants the curriculum to teach about racial diversity, LGBTQ issues, and environmental stewardship year round.

Goleta Water District
Lauren Hanson
Lauren Hanson is a current incumbent on the Goleta Water Board. Lauren has been a vocal advocate for banning fracking and other high intensity drilling techniques in Santa Barbara County, and has sent letters to decision-making bodies expressing concern for oil drilling though groundwater basins and to dangerous oil trucking through Santa Barbara. She prioritizes the delivery of safe, reliable water to everyone in the community, groundwater safety, and making the transition to carbon neutrality in the most economically and environmentally sensible way.
